Service-Learning Lesson Template

For additional information on service learning, please visit our Teaching Strategies page of MNSU Instructional Design Services.  In order to implement a service-learning project or lesson in your classroom, there are a few planning steps to consider.  Fill in the blanks with your lesson-specific information in order to plan your service-learning project.

A key component to a successful service-learning project is planning.  Please allow ample planning time for both yourself, your students, and any outside organization you might need to work with.

1. Develop clear and measurable learning objectives (including cognitive and behavioral objectives) – based on Bloom’s Taxonomy.  For service-learning projects, these objectives should reflect both course objectives and community needs.

By the end of the service-learning project,

  • Students will be able to __________________________________
  • Students will be able to __________________________________
  • Students will be able to __________________________________

Ex: Students will be able to plan and execute a marketing campaign for a charity fundraiser

2. Consider your audience

The demographic of the students in your class may help you focus on a project.  Consider that some students may work full-time, have no access to transportation, or have special needs that will need to be addressed in order for them to participate.  You may need to consider alternative assignments for those students who are unable to participate.

Class size may also determine the scope of your project.  You may want to consider offering a choice of projects if your class is very large.

Student considerations for completing this project:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

3.  Contact Community Partners

The needs in your community may vary from semester to semester.  While part of the service-learning experience can be to have students plan the project from start to finish, it is always a best practice to have contacted community partners who are willing or in need of service-learning projects.  Having several projects to choose from will also help in the event that one project falls through due to unforeseen circumstances.

Community Partners and Potential Projects:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

4. Identify the learning resources (if any) students will need to access before beginning the project

  • Informational videos such as safety videos
  • Content-related material
  • Background material on the project
  • Reflection assignment explanations
  • Reading materials

Ex:  Before class on Thursday, please watch the safety video about handling equipment

Learning Resources my lesson will include:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources I will need to create the pre-project learning resources:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

5. Identify in-Class Activities that your students will be completing that are connected to the project. Let students know if they need to bring or prepare anything before class. The idea is to create an active learning environment where students actively interact with the content and the instructor acts as a guide.

  • Materials preparation
  • Address common problems
  • Whole group discussion
  • Differentiation/Individualization
  • Group activities

Ex:  For Thursday’s class bring your project plan worksheet, you will be presenting the project idea to your peers for feedback and approval

Activities students will complete during class time of my lesson:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources my students will need to complete the in-class activities:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

6. Create the assessments that you will use for determining students’ mastery of the learning objectives.

  • Formative/Summative
  • Challenging questions
  • Reflections
  • Service supervisor evaluation forms
  • 360-degree team evaluations

Ex:  Reflect on your service-learning experience.  How did the marketing for the charity fundraiser differ from other for-profit marketing projects?  What did you learn from taking part in this project?

Assessment(s) I will use in my lesson:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources my students will need to complete the assessment(s):

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

7. Verify that your assessments and activities align with the learning objectives.  Do they allow your students to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning objectives?

Objective Activity Assessment

For Thursday’s class bring your project plan worksheet, you will be presenting the project idea to your peers for feedback and approval
