Open Pedagogy Lesson Plan Template

For additional information on various instructional strategies you could use in your classroom, please visit our Teaching Strategies page of the MNSU Academic Technology Services website.  In order to implement a lesson in your classroom that incorporates open pedagogy online resources, there are a few planning steps to consider.  Fill in the blanks with your lesson-specific information to plan your Open pedagogy lesson.

1. Develop clear and measurable learning objectives (including cognitive and behavioral objectives) – based on Bloom’s Taxonomy

By the end of my lesson,

  • Students will be able to __________________________________
  • Students will be able to __________________________________
  • Students will be able to __________________________________

Ex: Students will be able to create their own teaching content as a tool for beginners in the subject to use

2. Identify the learning resources students will need to access at home before coming to class.

  • Worked examples
  • Watch instructional video xxx (name of the video) for xx minutes  http://www… (for examples of tools you can use to create lectures, visit the MNSU Instructional Design Services)
  • Play Game xxx (name of the game) for xx minutes http://www…
  • Teacher self-created materials video, game, quiz …
  • Reading materials
  • Creative Commons materials***

***This is highly recommended for following the Open Pedagogy philosophy.  It is important that students understand what open licensing is and how it applies to what you will have them do in the classroom.

Ex:  Before class on Thursday, please watch instructional video #1.

Learning Resources my lesson will include:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources I will need to create the pre-class learning resources:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

3. Prepare the lesson that students will use to explore the content using open pedagogy

Activities students will complete connecting to the course content:

  • Open pedagogy activities such as video creating in open source
  • Students as producers
  • Peer learning
  • Deeply engage in reading and learning
  • Introducing learning objectivity

Ex:  Using our class OneNote Test Question folder, read the materials and watch the video.  Develop at least 3 multiple choice questions based on what you read/watched and place those in the OneNote folder…

Ways in which students will interact with the open pedagogy in my lesson:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources my students will need to complete the activity:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

4.  Identify any activities that your students will be completing post-activity.

  • Reflection
  • Follow up discussion
  • Written assignment

Activities students will complete post-activity:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources my students will need to complete the post-activity:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Ex: Write a one-page reflection on how you think the development of the test questions helped your understanding of the material.  Specifically, discuss how you decided to choose the material for the question.  Did you make the questions easy or hard?  Why?

5. Create the assessments that you will use for determining students’ mastery of the learning objectives.

  • Formative/Summative
  • Challenging questions
  • Participation portfolio

Ex: Create a 5-7 minute video explaining the topic of your choice for this chapter.  It should be professionally done. You will need to include presentation slides and a voiceover.  This video will be used to help students in the 101 sections study for their exams.  Think about how you would want someone to explain XYZ’s topic to you.  Use that to create your tutorial.

Assessment(s) I will use in my lesson:

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

Technology Resources my students will need to complete the assessment(s):

  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________
  • __________________________________

6. Verify that your assessments and activities align with the learning objectives.  Do they allow your students to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning objectives?
