The faculty is the content expert. A Student OER Specialist is not a content expert. It is important that both faculty and the Student OER Specialist are aware of this. As you present resources to faculty, you might want to consider the following.
Quality
Does the material provide accurate, relevant and appropriate information on the topic?
Course Competency
Does the material meet or exceed course competencies?
Is the material what was expected?
Does the material align with the faculty teaching style?
Encourage faculty to be open and honest, if they don’t like materials that is okay. Try to provide multiple options and pay attention to patterns in faculty choices. Is there a website or publisher they tend to gravitate towards? Is there a style or level of writing they prefer? All of these choices will help you find resources more efficiently. Don’t take it personally if a teacher doesn’t like the materials you’ve found, remember it’s their course and they have to teach with it.
If a faculty doesn’t feel that a resource meets standards and there are limited options besides the one provided let them know. Offer them options such as writing a short paper, asking permission to use a student’s essay or presentation, or create a video on the material.
