7 Basic Workflow

Every project is different. Some are very visual-based, some require journals or articles, others simply require the combination of a few existing materials to be ready for students.

Student OER Specialists are also not content creators.  They can assist in searching for resources and putting resources together. The instructor controls the content.

Establishing a workflow and expectations are important parts of the process and will help to ensure your projects stay on track and with expectations that are realistic. 

Below is a basic understanding of the Student OER Specialist Workflow.

Initial meeting with faculty to understand the Course Objectives and establish:

  1. Faculty Vision
  2. Student Needs
  3. Examine Previous/existing resources
  4. Identify Key Resources Needed
  5. Textbook, Canvas Course, Custom Resources, etc
  6. Perform Research
  7. Faculty Evaluation
  8. Secondary Research
  9. Faculty Reevaluation
  10. Building/Review phase
  11. Completed OER Materials

A large part of any OER development or implementation project should be in establishing expectations with faculty. When do they need the project completed by? Are they starting from scratch or adapting content? Are they expecting resources or a published textbook? All of these factors will affect not only how you approach the course, but how long it will take to complete the course.

You will also notice in the above workflow that the research portion of the project is repeated. Always expect to complete research after the initial materials are gathered. It is often the case that as materials are beginning to be organized that gaps in the material or additional needs will arise.
