Guardians

Jax couldn’t sleep. He wouldn’t. He knew that as soon as he fell to slumber, the Sightless One would transport him to the pocket dimension, and he’d have to save all of animalkind. “I can’t do this.” he told himself, lying in his bed while he stared at the dark ceiling.

“I can’t die yet. I’m only in fifth grade! I’ve never saved anybody in my LIFE! How can I save thousands now!?” he asked himself, sitting up in his bed, “THEY MAY BE OUT OF TIME, BUT I’VE GOT A WHOLE LIFE AHEAD OF ME!” he fought against the sleep dragging him down. “THEY CAN DIE FOR ALL I CARE!!”

As soon as the words were out, Jax gasped and covered his mouth and began to cry. He laid back down in his 2250 bed. It had been his grandmother’s. Boy, would she be disappointed in him…

“What am I saying?” Jax sobbed, burying his dark-skinned face in his hands. For what seemed like hours, he just cried.

Jax wiped away tears, and he took up a look of determination. “I have to do it.” he said, closing his heavy eyes, “This is my destiny.”

When Jax reached the pocket dimension, the battle had already begun. Ahiga, the moose, had antlers that were glowing with power, flinging invading humans all the way into the snow of the Arctic biome. Eshe, the lion, was sweeping humans off their feet at lightning speed, bowling them over before they can even aim their guns. Zain, who Jax simply thought of as the boring Guardian, was leaping high into the air and falling on the humans Eshe had knocked to the ground and biting their shoulders. But, the humans were fighting too. Each time they hit something, it instantly died.

But, now they were targeting Zain. He was getting shot at like crazy! It was his time. But, then there was a yowl of pain, and Jax saw Zain’s orange pelt go limp high in the sky. “No.” Jax said.

Zain fell limply to the ground.

“NO!”

“STOP!!” Jax screamed.

All the humans stopped and stared at him. Relief formed on all the faces of the animals, fought by the sadness of the death. Jax approached the battlefield clumsily, knowing that this is what he had to do.

“Go.” the Sightless One urged him on, “I believe in you.”
