The Masterpiece
Claire Moore
Once upon a time, there was a very talented artist. She never made mistakes. Her name was Lennon. One day, she went to school and signed up for a big art contest. Then she told her parents all about it when she got home. Her parents were so proud of her. Just then Lennon decided to look at when the deadline was. She looked at her sign-in paper, and saw that next week Friday was the due date. It was already Tuesday. She had to think of something quick. Even very talented artists who never make mistakes need at least a week and a half to create a masterpiece!
So she thought and thought and thought. Finally after several days of intense thought, an idea came to her! She was going to draw and paint a picture of a forest. She thought that was a great idea. So she went shopping for a canvas and some pencils and paint after school the next day.
Lennon immediately started to draw when she got home from the store. She started off by drawing the grass. That was pretty easy. Then when she finished the grass, she started drawing the first tree. It took her a little bit of time to finish that. By the time she finished the first tree, it was getting late. So she put the canvas away. Then she tucked herself into bed, and went to sleep.
When she woke up the next day, she took her canvas out from the closet. She wanted to draw a little bit before she went to school. But she heard her mom yelling at her to get ready for school now. She wanted to keep drawing, but she knew she had to get going.
“Coming!” Lennon called. She ran down the stairs and walked to school.
After what felt like FOREVER, the bell rang to go home. She was so pumped to go home. But when she got home, she found a horrifying sight!
Her little brother Liam found her canvas, and spilled water all over her drawing! That stinker is always getting into her stuff! The deadline is now in TWO DAYS. She angrily went to tell her mom that her baby brother, Liam, spilled water all over her drawing. Her mom reminded her that he’s just a baby, and he’s only one. Hearing that did not help!
“You always say that! He’s only one! He’s only one! How many more times do I have to hear that excuse?!”
“Don’t you take that tone with me, young lady! Up to your room, NOW! I don’t want to see you for the rest of the night!” her mother yelled.
So Lennon went up to her room, stomping her feet. Well, since she was grounded in her room, she started her picture all over again. What else was she supposed to do, anyway? So she got her supplies out and started drawing again. She finished the grass… again. Then she finished her first tree… again. Then she finished her second tree… again. It was getting late so she put it away and went to bed.
Tomorrow was the drawing contest deadline. So she went to school. Then the bell rang to go home. Her mom was picking her up today. When they got home, she ran out of the car and straight to her bedroom. She got her supplies out and started the painting process. This time she put her supplies UP HIGH on a shelf so that her baby brother can’t reach it.
She was so close to being done when her mom said it was time for dinner. She ran downstairs and ate as fast as she could. When she finished eating, she put her plate in the sink and ran upstairs to finish her painting. She finished the entire project just in time before bedtime. She went to bed happy and hoped for the best.
When she woke up in the morning, she was so excited to get her drawing to school. She slipped her beautiful piece of work into her backpack, hopped on her bike, and rode to school.
When she got there, she ran to the library to get it judged. When the judges made their decision, Lennon was so happy to hear that she won first place! She was jumping up and down with joy!
When the bell rang to go home, she hopped on her bike and rode home. When she got home, she told her mom, and she was so happy for her. They decided to go out for ice cream to celebrate! She’s already thinking about what to draw for the next competition! (And she will keep her work UP HIGH on a shelf from now on!)
