The Big Decision

Liam Erickson

Once there was a guy named James who was twenty years old and a two-time gold medal winning Olympian champion figure skater. He mastered the art of figure skating, so he decided to play ice hockey for the Minnesota Gophers college team. He had to practice every day in his hockey gear; it was a challenge, but he knew he had to keep going. There was a catch to all of this… he would have to move away from his family because his mom and dad live in Buffalo, New York.

He thought about it, but he did not know what to do. He thought the most important thing in life was family. Still, he decided to play hockey, but twice a month he would visit them at home. So he packed his bags to get ready for the flight to Minnesota.

When he was boarding the plane, all he could think about was his family, and wished he could visit them more than twice a month. Then he shot up from his seat and decided to stay and continue figure skating. He got off the plane and went outside the airport and called an Uber to pick him up.

When he arrived at his dad and mom’s house, he saw a for sale sign in his family’s yard. He called his mom and asked where she was! Why were they moving??

They were selling the house to move to Minnesota in order to be closer to their son. They wanted to visit him more and to support him. So they moved to Minnesota to watch their son play ice hockey.

James also continued figure skating in the off season. Even though he didn’t win any more gold medals, he realized that the most important thing in life is not winning gold medals. It is family… and family should support you whether you are athletic in ice hockey or artistic with figure skating.
