Weaving as an Art
Cheyanna Hansen
At the Weavers Guild of Minnesota, they believe that weaving and spinning are fundamental to the human experience. The hands-on classes cover how to weave towels, scarves, rugs and other fiber crafts. If you are interested in weaving or spinning, you can take a class at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota. The in-person classrooms are dedicated workspaces with looms, spinning wheels and tools.
Weaving is a textile art in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads, called the warp and weft, are interlaced with each other at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. The warp threads run lengthwise on the piece of cloth, while the weft runs horizontally. Weaving encourages a cultural connection and pride. Weaving allows people to recall memories of cooking, gardening, or growing up with parents and grandparents. It connects us to our families and allows families to celebrate their culture.
When people weave, they can make scarves, tapestries, clothing, blankets and rugs. Some furniture can also be woven, but not with sheep’s wool. Today, India is the capital of weaving. Surat, Gujarat, in India is the place where the most weaving happens. The country that produces the most wool is Australia. Other countries that are strong leaders in weaving are China, Germany, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
Turning wool into yarn takes five steps. First, people need to shear the sheep to get the wool. Next, they turn the fibers into one strand, and this is called pin drafting. After that, they spin the strands onto a spool. Then, they wash it with hot water and add color in the dyeing process. Last, they hang it up to let it dry. Then, they have yarn to turn into clothing, rugs and blankets.
One famous piece of artwork is a tapestry called The Lady and the Unicorn. This was woven around the year 1500. Many people really like it. This tapestry was woven using sheep’s wool in colors of pink, light blue, white, green and gold.
Sheep wool yarn is sheared from the sheep. They put the yarn on the drying rack to dry for an hour. Then, they put it in a bowl of water and add colors to the yarn. They turn yarn into clothes, hats, gloves, scarves, rugs and tapestries. Weaving is an art.
