Ice Sculpting
Brogan Lange
Once upon a time, there was a professional ice sculptor. Her name was Ayla. She never messed up. Then one day she went home to go tell her parents that she signed up for an ice sculpting contest.
“The winner gets $1,000,” Ayla said; she wants that money.
Her dad said she needs to win first place. Her mom said she has faith in her, and she will hopefully win! The contest is in two days, so she needs to get ready to compete.
She goes to practice after school for two days. She feels ready when contest day arrives! She starts in ten minutes. Right now, she is behind the stage getting ready. Now she is up, and her mom said she is nervous. They have one hour to finish their sculpture, and two pieces of ice… so only one mistake is allowed!
Ayla is doing a fish sculpture. She starts with the tail, and then she goes straight to the stomach, and then the fins, but she made a huge mistake! Now she is on her last piece of ice so she needs to be careful, and she needs to do it 100% perfect!
She starts on her LAST piece of ice! With 52 minutes left on the clock, she starts on the tail like she did last time. Then, she goes to the stomach… but she needs to be careful because last time she messed up. The stomach went well, now to do the fins. She only has 30 minutes left. She is on the gills. She messed them up!… but she fixed them by making them a little shorter. She has great problem solving skills!
Now, the last part is the mouth. She said that is the easiest part, so it should be simple.
She goes to the judge. The judges discuss the winner, and the anticipation over who would win was almost too much for Ayla to take!
They called up third place first, then second … oh, the momentum is building!!! Then they called first place. They called Ayla’s name! She won the big trophy, and she was super excited!
Then she went down to greet her mom. Her mom hugged her, told her what a good job she had done, and that she was proud of her! Then it was time to collect her prize money!
The judge handed her the money and said, “Congratulations!”
Ayla couldn’t wait to go home and share the good news with her dad. He was so proud of her! Then she hung her medal on the wall with all the other ones. She couldn’t wait to enter her next ice sculpting competition! It’s amazing how the arts can form such a passion within us!
