Birds

Scarlett Krueger

Tanley hated the island he was on. It had hundreds of palm trees, coconuts and a bunch of hard pebbles. It may have had an unlimited supply of food, but he lived there forever, and it felt the same. He also lived with his friends, Coral the know-it all, Finley the one with childlike wonder, and Cherry the leader.

“I’m going to see if there is any boat or canoe here,” said Tanley, a blue-and-yellow Ara.

Coral, a rosella parrot, sprouted out of her nest from when she was young. “You will not go on, or scout for a boat. You tried flying because you got restless and we had to carry you back here,” she cried, waking Finley, a cocktail parrot.

“Mhhhgh, what’s going on?” she asked, rubbing her eyes with her stubby wings.

“Oh well-”.

HOOOOOK

“What was that? Cherry get up!” said Coral, shaking Cherry, a scarlet macaw.

“I’m up!” she exclaimed, flipping over and hopping to her clawed feet.

The group flew off to the shore and hid behind a berry bush. A large boat with white sails, gashes the size of palm trees, and the wood was almost gone arrived. There were about 17 men aboard. Immediately two men got off and started chopping the trees down.

“Peck at their faces!” cried Cherry.

When they did it, Finley got hit and passed out on the ground. They rushed to her aid. That night they made a plan to leave the ruddy island. After Finley awoke they flew to the ship.

“Hey, Tanley you and I will hide behind the barrels and Finley, Coral, you hide behind the…um…balls of rope!” explained Cherry.

“Don’t get seen, you saw what happened to Finley,” said Coral. They landed on the boat and hid. The voyage lasted four days and three nights. The ship got to a dock quickly and they flew away.

“I’m glad we slipped past the humans! Hey Tan-”

BOOM!

Coral was interrupted by the boom of thunder.

“Land, I can’t see! Where are you? Guys,guy-“

“Down here Coral, use your eyes!”

Coral looked down and saw her friends down in an acai tree. She flew down to the tree where her friends were cuddled up close and shivering.

The next day, they flew away from the acai tree and flew for many miles. Finally they found an old tree patch and found a whole community of tropical birds. They greeted Coral, Cherry, Finley and Tanley, “Hello,” and “Welcome, you guys!”

“Can we live with you?” asked Finley. “

The birds looked at each other, with broad smiles on their beaks and bills. “Of course!” And they lived happily ever after!
