The Surprise

By Ella Blexrud

“Ella, time to get up!” said Ella’s mom, Kris.

“Noooo!” said Ella.

“Yes,” said Kris.

“Fiiiineeee! Only because I’m hungry!” said Ella. Ella got up and went downstairs for breakfast.

“You’re weird,” said Ella’s Brother, Cam.

“Am not!” said Ella.

“Yeah, right,” said Cam.

“Okay, fine, I AM weird and I AM proud of it!” said Ella.

“Guys, get along!” said Kris. “I have a surprise for you if you can prove to me you deserve it!”

“OKAY!” said Ella smiling. What could the surprise be? “Ok, Mom, why are you acting so suspicious? Tell us the surprise!” said Ella.

“Yeah,” said Cam. “For once, I agree with Ella, and THAT’S rare!”

“HEY!” said Ella.

“Okay guys, we are going to Wisconsin Dells for the ‘Mom’s Dance Recital’!” said Kris.

“OMG NO WAY, YOU’RE LYING!” said Ella.

“Nope, I’m not,” said Kris.

“Oh! Okay!” said Ella excitedly. This was a great day already!

Clothes, check. Toothbrush, check. Wait… “SWIMSUIT!” said Ella. She found her swimsuit and packed it.

“Mom! Your favorite child is ready to go,” said Ella as she headed downstairs. “Whatever,” said Cam.

Cam, Ella, Kris, and Ella’s dad, Ryan, piled into the car.

An hour and minutes later the children started asking…

“Are we there, yet?” said Ella.

“Are we there, yet?” said Cam.

“Are we there, yet?” said Ella.

“Are we there, yet?” said Cam.

“Kids. Be quiet. The ‘low fuel’ gas light is on. We MUST get gas,” said Ryan.

“Why? Why now?” asked Ella?

“I agree! Why now?” asked Cam.

Ryan insisted, “When your ‘low fuel’ gas light comes on, that’s like your car talking to you. We MUST get gas now!” Ryan stated firmly.

“We will get gas, and THEN we will almost be there,” said Kris. The family gets gas and soon after arrives at Kalahari.

“Wow!!” said Ella.

“It’s so big!” yelled Cam. They got out of the car and grabbed the suitcases and headed inside.

“Wow! A GLASS elevator!” said Ella.

They checked in and went to the hotel room. “Wow,” said Ella.

“Lets go to the pooooool!” said Cam.

“Okay, let’s go!” said Ella.

“Now, hang on,” said their parents. “We need to discuss what to do if one of you gets lost.”

But it was too late! Ella and Cam took off and were gone without listening to another word!

Surprise, surprise. It didn’t take long at all before Ella and Cam became separated and started panicking when they couldn’t find each other. They tracked down every lifeguard they could find, describing what their brother/sister looked like, when they last saw them, who their parents were.

Finally, the police had to get involved. After what seemed like hours of searching, Ella was found talking to the lifeguards by the Hurricane, and Cam was found talking to the lifeguards by the Black Hole, and their parents were found talking to the police in a complete panic!

“Thank God you’re both ok!” exclaimed Ryan and Kris.

“Kids, we were going to give you instructions about how to stay together and what to do if you got lost, but you just took off!” Ryan cried.

“We’re SO SORRY, Mom and Dad!” said Ella and Cam. “That was SOOOOO scary! There’s NO WAY we are running off like that again!”

“I was terrified I would never see Cam again!” said Ella.

“And I was scared I’d never see Ella again!” cried Cam.

“Oh,” said Kris. “So you two DO care about each other, even if you don’t act like it?” asked Kris.

Ella and Cam looked at each other and hugged. Obviously, they both cared more than they thought.

“Children,” said Ryan, “When the car tells us we need gas, then we need to get gas. When your parents tell you to stay together, you need to stay together.” Ryan almost broke down.

The whole family agreed that communication among one another is way too important to ignore, and spent the rest of the weekend TOGETHER, enjoying their family time!
