Lost in Silence
By William Waldner
A talk without words,
Unsettling stillness in the air.
Two friends sit on the floor,
Pretending to care.
Everything on display,
Ulterior motives and all.
Eye contact unbreaking,
As tears begin to fall.
Two different people,
With two different objectives.
Both have much to say,
But not enough perspective.
Two lives yet to develop,
Trying to understand one another.
Though they aren’t related,
They are still brothers.
An elephant in the room,
Yet to be addressed,
And a long-lasting love,
Being put to rest
A few words started it,
Now they don’t make a sound.
Where talking has failed,
Thoughts and actions are loud.
Every movement they make,
From their posture to their breath,
Shows that each is suffering,
From pain of untold depth.
The complexities of life,
And the loss of love.
Each goes their own way,
Like the wings of a dove.
Years of both their lives,
Just thrown down the drain.
A sense of guilt and sorrow,
Brings unimaginable pain.
An eternal goodbye,
Brings enough pain for two.
Why couldn’t they just say,
“I love you.”
