By Emily Sustaita

When you take one step forward,

I’ll take one back.

When I start to hang more loosely around you,

    I’ll tighten my mouth shut.

I sit far away from you,

    And only speak when near.

My eyes look one into yours,

    And I turn them away.

And yet, when I sit far away,

I want to be near you.

When my screws are too tight,

I want to speak more openly.

When our eyes meet,

I want to be able to look into yours.

When you take one step forward,

I want to take one too.

I want to be close to you,

Yet be the farthest away from you

    Without hurting you.
