The Deaf Boy

By Matthew Ranzenberger

In 2004, a little boy was born. He had amazing hearing when he was three. As he grew older, he slowly started losing his hearing. By the age of six, he was already wearing hearing aids. When he was 11 years old, he was completely deaf. He lost his hearing because of a disease called mumps. All his family members were trying to learn sign language to communicate with him.

His name is Jaxon Fields. He has brown hair, blue eyes and he his tall. He did not live in a huge house. Money was pretty tight. He lived in a small town in Arizona. He played lots of sports like football, soccer, basketball and baseball.

Basketball was his favorite sport, and he was the best player on the team, the Eagles, despite the fact that he could not hear. One year their basketball team made it to the playoffs. It was 39 to 35 in the first half. Sadly, they lost the championship game to the number one seed.

Jaxon had very good grades in school; he was basically getting straight As in every class. He did not have many friends. He had one friend named Jimmy. They go to each other’s houses to play and work on assignments. They both went to the same private school. They were in all the same classes in school.

Unfortunately, he gets bullied a lot in school for having a hearing aid and being deaf. The person’s name that bullies him is Jared. Jared has bullied him consistently for a year now. It can be hard to stand up for yourself when you’re being bullied. As a deaf person, it was that much harder for Jaxon to stand up for himself. Jared stole Jaxon’s lunch money. Jared trips Jaxon any chance he gets. Jared even pushed Jaxon into the girls’ bathroom one time! Finally, the principal of the school caught him right in the act! Jared got expelled.

Now Jaxon is doing great! Perhaps the bullying wouldn’t have gone on as long as it did if Jaxon had someone speak up for him. No one wants to be the target of bullying. I think Jaxon would want to communicate to everyone he knows that if you know someone is being bullied, and you’re too scared to stand up to that bully, tell an adult you trust and get the bullying stopped!
