Whispering Blades
By Zander Hansen
I can see bugs all around me down in my blades of grass. I can see worms crawling in the dirt. I can feel the worms and bugs crawling on me as I move in the wind. When Jon cuts my blades of grass I can see the insects running away fast and far because Jon’s lawn mower is moving closer to them and their insect friends in the dirt and grass.
When I look up, I can see the gray and black clouds. It might rain today.
Jon cuts the grass every day in his neighborhood. He likes to do it in the summer. When there is summer break for Jon, his neighbors ask him to mow their lawns. He cuts the grass for his neighbors so that he can get some money in his hand so that he can get a new lawn mower. He will use it for his business. The neighbors say thank you to the kid named Jon because he does good work. He says, “You are welcome,” back to the neighbors.
Jon loves to mow lawns because he likes to be outside. He cuts the neighbors’ grass every morning and cuts the neighbors’ grass in the afternoons too. Jon likes to listen to music and smell the fresh air while he is mowing the grass. He also smells the fresh cut grass and he can see the birds in the trees.
Every time it rains it makes the grass grow until it needs to be cut again. Today was one of those days and so Jon had to hurry to get his work done.
There are bugs in the grass and insects in the dirt. They knew Jon was coming with the lawn mower to cut up the grass, so they had to hide. The lawn mower was coming so the bugs went running. They hid down in holes in the ground and they hid in objects laying in the grass. They hoped they didn’t get sucked up by the lawn mower or get cut up by the blade on the lawn mower.
When the lawn mower stops moving it means it’s done mowing the grass until another day. This day it started to rain and so Jon stopped cutting the grass. Luckily for these bugs, the rain had started. They were safe for another day and I’m safe for another day too!
