False Salomon’s seal (Maianthemum racemosum)
One year after taking this photo, I returned to the spot looking for those profuse blooms to appear again. Instead, I found the patch of leaves still there, but with only flowerless stalks remaining after being browsed down by some mammal. So it goes…and we must look forward to another year’s annual cycle of renewal while taking comfort in the thought that a forest creature found sustenance here.
The oak tree and wildflower in the photo grow near the shoreline of Little Bass Lake, beneath which I scattered a small portion of my father’s ashes.
